Welsh Cakes

Today I made welsh cakes as it was St David's Day yesterday.
8ozs flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon mixed spice
2 oz marg
2 oz Crisco
2 oz sugar
2 oz raisins or currants
1 egg
maybe milk
(If using 1lb of flour then double all quantities except the egg and add 2-4 tbs of milk)
Put the flour, baking powder and spice in a bowl, add the fats and rub in until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and raisins. add the slightly beaten egg and mix well. The mixture should form a firm dough, add milk a little at a time if necessary.
Roll out to 1/4inch thick, cut into rounds, cook on a griddle for 3-5 minutes on each side. Cool, maybe sprinkle with sugar (I do not), serve alone or with butter.
