Psalm 145

Jesus wants me for a sunbeam

Lyrics Nellie Talbot Music Edwin O Excell

Jesus wants me for a sunbeam,
To shine for Him each day;
In every way try to please Him,
At home, at school, at play.
  • Refrain:
    A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
    Jesus wants me for a sunbeam;
    A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
    I’ll be a sunbeam for Him.

Amongst my earliest memories is keeping my Grandma company as she prepared lunch in her little kitchen. She would be singing either this hymn or

Jesus Loves Me

(Lyrics: Anna B Warner, Music:William Bradbury)

Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak but He is strong

cho: Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so

At the time I thought singing hymns was a bit odd, nobody else did that whilst they worked. My Grandma was a quiet lady who devoted her whole life to her family, including me. Yes it is important that I knew that Grandma was loved by Jesus and that she as his sunbeam told me so. I hope that I do the same to everyone that I meet, especially the members of my family.

Psalm 145:4 One generation will commend your works to another;
they will tell of your mighty acts.

How blessed you were to have such a beautiful relationship with your grandmother! Mine was more distant, but there was a maiden aunt who loved me so close and warm, and still fills my heart. She sewed, and we read together. Sometimes she sang snatches of hymns as her treadle sewing machine added the bass part. your message reminded me of alternative words for "Jesus Loves me" that speaks to my world today... still relevant -- still reverent.

JESUS LOVES ME

Jesus loves me, this I know,
Though my hair is white as snow.
Though my sight is growing dim,
Still He bids me trust in Him.

(CHORUS)

YES, JESUS LOVES ME... YES, JESUS LOVES ME...
YES, JESUS LOVES ME FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO.

Though my steps are oh, so slow,
With my hand in His I'll go
On through life, let come what may,
He'll be there to lead the way.

(CHORUS)

Though I am no longer young,
I have much which He's begun.
Let me serve Christ with a smile,
Go with others the extra mile.

(CHORUS)

When the nights are dark and long,
In my heart He puts a song.
Telling me in words so clear,
"Have no fear, for I am near."

(CHORUS)

When my work on earth is done,
And life's victories have been won.
He will take me home above,
Then I'll understand His love

(CHORUS)

I love Jesus, does He know?
Have I ever told Him so?
Jesus loves to hear me say,
That I love Him every day.
